Michael Carrick has praised his dream start to life as Manchester United’s caretaker manager after leading the club to a thrilling derby victory at Old Trafford. Carrick watched as United crushed Manchester City in their best performance of the season.<\/p>\n
Second-half goals from Brian Mbeumo and Patrick Dorg stunned Pep Guardiola and his flop. And Carrick admitted his first game in charge could not have gone any better.<\/p>\n
“It’s a great start. There’s no getting away from it. Before the game, we talked as coaches and said the players are in a good situation.”<\/p>\n
“City are an unbelievably good team and teams change that so you have to go for plan B and C. But to go that well, the players were great in a lot of ways. Yeah, pretty good.”<\/p>\n
Carrick revealed how the players got a lot of motivation from the loud cheering of the home crowd. But he warned that United had set the standard for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

Carrick hopes to get the results he needs to have a chance of securing a permanent job. He added: “I think the players hated it. They left the dressing room incredibly desperate to do well.<\/p>\n
“I said this could be a magical place. I hope this is just the beginning. We’re not too crazy. That’s the challenge now. It needs to be some version of normal.”<\/p>\n
“Certainly we’re not going to play the game with the same emotion and emotion as we did today, but there are standards that we have to meet.<\/p>\n
“Consistency is the key to success and if we can see we are close to winning. We have another big game next week (against Arsenal) and we have a good foundation to build on.”<\/p>\n

Guardiola made no excuses and acknowledged that the best team won. And while he insisted Diogo Dalot should have been sent off for a brutal challenge on Jeremy Doku in the first half, he did not want to blame the result on the poor decision.<\/p>\n
He said: “The better team won. They were better. When a team is better, you have to accept that. They had an energy that we didn’t have. So congratulations (to United).”<\/p>\n
“We have a duty to analyze the whole game – and they were better. You could say it was a red card, it was a different game after that. It’s easy for me to come here and say it should have been a red card.<\/p>\n
“It doesn’t matter. If it’s about winning or losing games, we won’t grow. To win, we have to do better.”<\/p>\n
