Carrick’s tenure until the end of the season was announced this week. His debut will see United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford in an early Saturday morning kick-off. Before that match, Keane had already targeted Carrick and his wife.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I’m more concerned about the appointment of the manager and the staff that’s come in with him, but I think at this stage of the season, when you look at the group of players they have, most people will. That’s going to be a big question, look at Michael Carrick, whatever his mandate was at Middlesbrough, I’m sure it was to get promoted, but he didn’t do that so you could say he failed there.”

“I’m not saying he’s a bad manager, it’s a difficult job, but it’s great for him to get the opportunity.
