The 33-year-old will miss Sunday’s final in Morocco but has one game left before returning to England. This means he will miss Saturday afternoon’s Premier League match between Liverpool and Burnley, taking his total number of games missed since departing for AFCON to seven.

Manager Arne Slott revealed in a press conference on Friday that he has been in contact with Salah, who could be involved in Wednesday night’s trip to Marseille.

“First of all, he plays a big game for Egypt on Saturday and then he comes back. I’m happy to have him back,” the Liverpool manager said.

“Mo was very important to this club and to me so I’m happy to have him back and even if we had 15 attackers I’d be happy to see Mo back, but that’s not our situation. I’ll be happy to have him back after tomorrow’s important game.”

When asked about the exact timing of his return, Slott added: “We are negotiating with him next week. First of all, he needs to play an important game on Saturday. Champions League? We are discussing it together now.”

Salah departed for the African Cup of Nations under intense scrutiny after a turbulent season. The Egyptian forward publicly criticized Slott, claiming that the manager weakened him by leaving him out of the squad, but the two later cleared the air in talks.

He then provided an assist in Liverpool’s victory over Brighton and departed for international duty.

Since then, the Reds have enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions after losing 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven on 26 November, with the matter resolved.

Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League going into this weekend’s game, but Slott continues to push his team to improve.

“In the last 11 games we have conceded very few chances, whereas in the period before that we created many chances and conceded more chances,” he said.

“And it was a more open game, which people probably look back on and wish it was now, but the result wasn’t what we wanted.

“We have to find that balance, and we will. Our players are growing, finding faith and getting healthier.
