MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Ruben Amorim is stepping down as Manchester United coach after just 14 months.

The Premier League club announced on Monday that Amorim’s reign had come to an end, a decision that came a day after he made the decision. provocative comment On his position after the 1-1 draw with Leeds.

“Manchester United sit sixth in the Premier League and the club’s leadership have reluctantly decided that the time is right to make a change,” United said in a statement. “This will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the best results in the Premier League.”

United have announced that youth coach Darren Fletcher will be in charge of Wednesday’s game against Burnley.

The Portuguese has broken record after record for the 20-time English champions, including finishing last in the Premier League last season. United’s job has proven to be one of the most difficult in world football since club legend Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, with Amorim becoming the sixth permanent manager or coach to be sacked in that time.

Amorim apologized to the fans At the end of last season, he put it this way: “Disastrous” A campaign that saw United finish 15th in the table, the highest number of losses and lowest total points won in a Premier League season.

Last week, there were reports that club officials had doubts about his tactics.

On Sunday, he sought to clarify his position.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United,” he said. “And that’s clear.

“I’m not going to quit. I’m going to keep doing my job until someone else comes in to replace me.”
