The ball went to one side, the goalkeeper to the other, and it was enough for Phenex to take maximum six points in Group E and advance to the knockout stage.

This came as a relief to the many Algerian fans who made the relatively short journey to Rabat’s Moulay El Hassan Stadium. The team won the title in Egypt in 2019, before being eliminated after the group stage in both competitions.

Rayan Ait Nouri fell while trying to pass Burkina Faso defender Ismahila Ouédraogo, and referee Daniel Lariaea Nii Ai awarded the spot kick.

Algeria dominated the ball and the Stallions increased their chances without bothering Zidane’s son Luca too much inside the Algerian goal until he was tested by Lassina Traore in the 83rd minute.

Siriake Hirie might have equalized in stoppage time, but his header hit the Algerian goalkeeper. The top two from each group and the best third place finisher will advance.

Defending champions Ivory Coast will face five-time champions Cameroon in the second half of Group F, but Mozambique boosted their promotion hopes with a 3-2 win over Gabon.

___

Associated Press on Africa Cup: https://apnews.com/hub/africa-cup-of-nations

Source link

RABAT, Morocco (AP) – Zinedine Zidane watched again and Riyad Mahrez scored again on Sunday as Algeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations to advance to the last 16.
