MANCHESTER, England (AP) \u2014 Chelsea saw a 44% jump in injuries after the game. extra large club world cup<\/span> This year, according to findings released Tuesday. <\/p>\nbut, Newly Expanded Tournament<\/span> The latest edition of the European Football Men’s Injury Index has so far found it has had a “minimal impact” on overall injuries.<\/p>\nWhen it was confirmed that FIFA’s new flagship club event would increase from seven teams to 32 teams in 2023, there was fierce opposition, with players’ associations warning of the physical and mental wear and tear on players from the ever-expanding fixture schedule. However, FIFA went ahead and held the tournament in the United States from June to July.<\/p>\n
Chelsea continued: Win the first tournament<\/span>accepted the trophy from U.S. President Donald Trump at MetLife Stadium and took home approximately $125 million in prize money. However, according to the index, between June and October, Chelsea had the most injuries of any of the nine clubs in Europe’s top flight participating in the Club World Cup, with 23.<\/p>\nThat includes star player Cole Palmer, who saw a 44% year-over-year increase.<\/p>\n
Despite an increase in injuries for Chelsea, who played 64 games in the 2024-25 season, an index compiled by global insurance company Howden found that injuries overall have decreased. <\/p>\n
\u201cIn principle, this increased workload could lead to an increase in overall injury severity and would be expected to lead to an increase in the number of injuries,\u201d the index report said, but added: \u201cThe data suggest that the impact on overall injury figures will be minimal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite these figures, the authors of the report admit that it is too early to fully assess the impact of the Club World Cup, as the findings cover only October.<\/p>\n
Howden’s head of sport, James Burrows, said: “We would expect to see a spike in impact during that period from November to February.” “What we’ve seen so far is that we’re seeing an impact there from the summer tournaments.”<\/p>\n
Manchester City have scored 22 goals since the tournament, the most of any of the nine teams in Europe’s top leagues – England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.<\/p>\n
These teams recorded 146 injuries from June to October, down from 174 the previous year.<\/p>\n
From August to October, that number was 121, the index’s lowest three-month reading in the past six years. <\/p>\n
