Lionel Messi’s visit to India descended into complete chaos as thousands of irate supporters stormed the pitch and threw bottles after being denied access to the football legend. Huge crowds stayed well past midnight to greet the Argentine maestro on the first leg of the GOAT India Tour 2025, a four-city, three-day schedule touted as a historic milestone for Indian football.

Messi landed at 2:26 a.m., sparking scenes of near-chaos as supporters rushed between airport terminals, shouting Messi’s name and waving Argentine flags. Messi was immediately ushered into his accommodation through the VIP entrance under tight security alongside Luis Suárez and Rodrigo de Paul.

The Hyatt Regency quickly transformed into the center of what event planners called “Messimania,” with fencing, percussion instruments and flashing cell phone lights installed, and worshipers camped out overnight in the reception area. Some fans even secured hotel reservations in hopes of seeing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner up close.

The tour was aimed at showcasing Messi across Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi and included meetings with Bollywood celebrities, business figures and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In Kolkata, Messi received an official welcome from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and performer Shah Rukh Khan, and a brief photoshoot in which Khan’s son Abram also participated created a stir online.

But Saturday’s main attraction, the Vivekananda Yuva-Bharati Salt Lake Stadium, quickly descended into chaos. Thousands of supporters, who paid more than 5,000 rupees (about £41) for tickets, packed into the ground expecting a victory lap, a showcase and a festive tribute performance.

Messi intended to thank his supporters from the lawn. However, the shock surrounding the players became unmanageable.

Surrounded by politicians, dignitaries, celebrities and photographers, Messi’s protection personnel abruptly canceled the scheduled circuit, citing safety concerns. His shift was reduced to a fleeting entry and acknowledgment, and he was removed in less than 10 minutes.

When the news that Messi would not be back filtered through the terraces, anger erupted. Supporters began shouting indignantly.

Stewards were forced to intervene as projectiles flew, billboards were torn up and sections of the crowd rushed onto the playing surface. The World Cup winners and other dignitaries hurried away under tight security, leaving thousands of spectators embarrassed.

Social media quickly filled up with photos of vandalized billboards, thrown objects and furious fans. Many supporters claimed they felt duped by advertisements that guaranteed “once in a lifetime” encounters. “I paid 12,000 rupees, but I couldn’t even see his face. There were no kicks, no penalties, nothing,” said one person.

Later, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed regret over the chaotic incident and issued a public apology.

Speaking to X, she described the mishandling at Salt Lake Stadium as “deeply disturbing” and unveiled plans for a formal inquiry led by retired judge Asim Kumar Ray to establish accountability and prevent such incidents from happening again.

Event organizer Satadul Dutta hailed Messi’s arrival as significant, pointing to his recent World Cup win and record eighth Ballon d’Or, suggesting even a short visit could revitalize Indian football.

But the Kolkata fiasco has cast a shadow over the rest of the tour’s destinations, with Mumbai authorities already issuing traffic alerts in anticipation of large numbers of participants.

What began as a tribute to soccer’s greatest talent ended up being a somber reminder of crowd management, organizational flaws and the dangers of prioritizing showmanship over good planning.
