Lionel Messi’s visit to India descended into complete chaos as thousands of fans, enraged by not getting a glimpse of the football icon, invaded the pitch and threw bottles. Huge crowds waited past midnight to welcome the Argentine superstar to the opening match of the GOAT India Tour 2025, a three-day, four-city itinerary touted as a landmark moment in Indian football.

Messi landed at 2:26 a.m., sparking near-hysterical scenes as fans sprinted between the airport gates, shouting Messi’s name and waving Argentine flags. Messi, along with Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, were escorted under tight security and quickly moved from the VIP entrance to the hotel.

The Hyatt Regency quickly became the epicenter of what organizers called “Messimania,” with barricades, oil drums, flashing cell phone cameras and fans camping out in the lobby all night. Some supporters booked rooms hoping to see the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner up close.

The tour is designed to showcase Messi in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, and will include meetings with Bollywood stars, business leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In Kolkata, Messi was formally welcomed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and actor Shah Rukh Khan, and a brief photo opportunity with Khan’s son Abram attracted widespread attention online.

But Saturday’s marquee event at the Vivekananda Yuva-Bharati Salt Lake Stadium quickly fell apart. Thousands of ticket holders, many of whom paid more than Rs 5,000, flocked to the venue in anticipation of laps of honor, exhibition moments and a celebratory tribute show. Messi was scheduled to greet fans from the pitch.

However, the crowd around the players was overwhelming. Surrounded by politicians, officials, celebrities and photographers, Messi’s security team abruptly abandoned a scheduled lap, citing safety concerns. His appearance was cut short to a brief walk-on and a wave, then he was carted off the field within 10 minutes.

Frustration boiled over as rumors spread through the stands that Messi would not return. Fans began to scream in protest. Bottles were thrown, warehouses were demolished and security were forced to intervene as sections of the crowd stormed onto the pitch. The World Cup winners and other VIPs rushed out under tight security, leaving thousands of stunned spectators.

Social media was soon flooded with images of damaged billboards, flying debris and angry supporters. Many fans said they felt misled by promotional materials promising a “once in a lifetime” experience. “I paid 12,000 rupees, but I couldn’t even see his face. There were no kicks, no penalties, nothing,” said one.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later expressed shock at the scene and publicly apologized. In a post to

Organizer Satadul Dutta described Messi’s visit as historic, citing his recent World Cup victory and eighth Ballon d’Or award in history, and said even a short visit could provide inspiration for Indian football. But the Kolkata fiasco has cast a shadow over the rest of the tour, with Mumbai authorities already issuing a traffic advisory ahead of expected crowds.

What began as a celebration of soccer’s greatest stars ended as a stark warning about crowd management, failure to plan, and the dangers of overselling spectacle over substance.
