The Washington Spirit are committed to keeping free agent forward Trinity Rodman with the team and will continue to work with the National Women’s Soccer League and Rodman’s representatives despite last week’s chaotic negotiations, team leadership announced Tuesday. <\/p>\n
The team’s president of football operations Haley Carter and general manager Nathan Minion said negotiations between Rodman and the league are ongoing and there is no actual deadline. Rather than being discouraged, both parties feel that all involved are working to find a solution. <\/p>\n
“I think the league is committed to working with us and we’re committed to working with them through that, but there’s been quite a bit of back and forth on that. So it’s just an ongoing process and that’s why I’m saying we’re going to probably have daily conversations with them and try to understand this and hopefully get a solution that can keep Trinity here for a long time,” Minion said when he and Carter spoke to reporters for the first time. they have been appointed to a new role<\/span> With the Spirit. <\/p>\nThe league rejected the Spirit’s multi-year contract offer for Rodman last week. “Our goal is to ensure that the best players in the world, including Trinity, continue to call this league home. We will continue to do everything we can, using every means available within our rules, to keep Trinity Rodman here,” the league said in a statement. <\/p>\n
Carter suggested the NWSL needs to rethink its salary cap if it wants to attract and retain top talent. <\/p>\n
“There are comprehensive discussions going on about potential solutions at league level. The reality is that our current salary cap structure is one that was built for a different era in women’s football. This is a global sport and we believe that it will continue to grow as the sport continues to grow globally. “With international clubs such as Chelsea and Arsenal increasing their investment, there will need to be a mechanism in place that allows NWSL clubs to compete for and retain domestic players as well as overseas players,” Carter said. “I believe we need to start getting creative because it’s bigger than just one team. It’s bigger than just one player. It’s up to the league’s ability to keep the best players in this league as we continue to grow.”<\/p>\n
