Arne Slott appears to have offered Mohamed Salah a chance to save his Liverpool career, but only if the Egyptian winger feels he made a mistake in a candid interview at the weekend. The Reds, without Salah, secured an important Champions League win on Tuesday night by defeating Inter Milan 1-0 at the San Siro. The match was Salah’s first game since his bombshell interview on Saturday night, after coming off the bench against Leeds United.

Salah claimed he was “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool after being benched for three games in a row. The 33-year-old also claimed that his relationship with Slott had broken down, but the manager said he was in a different mood ahead of the trip to Milan. In his absence, Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the final minute to earn a big three points and increase the chances of the Premier League champions avoiding a place in the knockout stages. After the match, Slott was asked by Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf whether he intended to speak to Salah before Saturday’s visit to Brighton. The game at Anfield is the last game Salah will be able to play before the African Cup of Nations, with some suggesting it could be the legendary forward’s final appearance for the Reds.

The Liverpool manager told Amazon Prime Video: “The first thing to think about is: Does the player think he made a mistake? I’m not saying I won’t talk to him. The next question is: Does the initiative come from me or from him? That’s another question to answer.”

“But the focus tonight should be, for example, Virgil (van Dijk), because the fans are singing about him. But it’s not just Virgil. Ibou Konate has had some difficult moments recently, but today he played a great game against two very good strikers.”

Asked if the win at Inter was a relief, Slott added: “If you’re talking about the draw against Leeds (3-3) and the draw against Sunderland, then yes, it was a relief. But that’s not what you’re describing.”

“I take these things apart. It was really tough for the players to concede in the last minute against Leeds. We played a very good game and conceded very few chances. Overall in the last four games we have conceded very few chances.”

“It was really tough to come through with three goals conceded and a draw. That alone was already emotional, but what happened afterwards was also emotional. It also cost us a little bit of energy.

“For the fourth game in 10 days, the club has 13 available outfield players with Premier League and Champions League experience. “Conceding 3-3 is already a big blow because we almost got seven points in three games. “When you concede after that, a lot is said and it always affects the team a little bit.

“OK, this is about the player with the manager and the club, but it also affects the players a little bit. It’s never good to see something like this happen to a team-mate, especially because he has so much influence over the club and the players. I think tonight should be all about what we did here at the stadium against Inter. All the focus should be on that.”

“I fully understand that on Friday all the questions will be about Mo, but these players deserve to be talked about.”

Captain Van Dijk told the broadcaster: “Obviously it’s difficult. It’s a collective difficult situation that we’re all in. Things are going on between Mo and the club. As a result of that, he’s not here today and he’s not here to help us get the three points. That’s the reality.”

“I don’t think anything has changed in terms of focus and determination to get results for the football club. If someone has to apologize, I don’t think I’m the one to say it. He’s the one to vent his feelings.”

“That’s something the club has to deal with and so do we. When you look in the dressing room the day after (the press conference) on Sunday, nothing has changed. We have a responsibility to ourselves, to the whole football club and to all our fans around the world to perform. The focus was there.”

Van Dijk’s compatriot Seedorf told the centre-back he thought his teammate Salah should apologize, to which the Liverpool captain replied: “I’ve known Mo for a long time. We’re good friends. We’ve been through good times and bad. He’s been a big part of my success at the club and I’ve been a big part of his success.”

“We are talking, but things like that naturally stay indoors. As a team we have to brace ourselves and counter the outside noise. That’s the only thing we have to prepare for. I encourage the players to do that.”

Vice-captain Andy Robertson, meanwhile, said: “It’s a tough situation. We’re talking about one of the greatest players to ever play for this club. I signed at the same time as him. Whatever happened happened.”

“Internally we are all the same. It depends on other people, it has nothing to do with me. I love playing with Mo Salah and I want to continue to play with him. We know how important it is to be in the top eight and avoid the play-offs. We were unlucky with the opponents we drew last season.”

The Scotland left-back added: “It’s a great result. We knew we were in a tough situation against a team who were in a good period. We had to put up a fight and bite back. The clean sheet was crucial and then we went for the goal.”

“We all needed it. We know that the results and performances weren’t good enough. It’s important for this club to qualify for the Champions League. It was a big result for all of us.”
