Manchester United players have been criticized by former stars for their inconsistent form in the Premier League, and it appears to be having an impact.

It has been claimed that former Manchester United players took part in a pundit’s game, with criticism accusing them of “letting down” members of the current squad. Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane are all mainstays in broadcasting and have been fearless in speaking out when it comes to aspects of Reuben Amorim’s struggles.

United still have won more Premier League titles than any other club, with the likes of Neville, Scholes and Keane involved in many of those 13 titles. But the last time it took place was more than a decade ago, and United have probably never given any more thought to returning to the top.

According to The Mail, this has led to “red lines” being drawn between some current and former players. Criticism has also come during studio broadcasts of United’s league and cup games, with some reportedly feeling that pundits could have shown more sympathy.

“The players feel the weight of their words deeply,” a representative close to United’s first team was quoted as saying by the Mail. “They’ve seen all the clips and are really disgusted. Their view is that they want some understanding because they know what it’s like to feel the pressure of being a United player, but they feel they don’t understand.”

“Some of the players think maybe the ’92 class doesn’t want them to succeed in order to protect their legacy. So, certainly the relationship was bad. The players certainly don’t want to be interviewed on TV. The situation goes far beyond that.”

Neville and Scholes are the only Class of 92 heroes – players who went through the academy and went on to play for United – who have not commented on current players. However, they are most visible on television and other media, as is Keane, who was once their captain.

Mr Scholes recently took a break from his television career to look after his son Aiden, who has autism. “He can’t speak because he’s mute. When I say he can’t speak, I think he understands more than we think,” Scholes explained on the Stick to Football podcast.

“He has sounds, but only those close to him can understand what he’s saying. He’s autistic, but it’s like really severe autism, because he can go to school normally even though he has autism.”

Last season, United endured the worst season in Premier League history, with Erik ten Hag sacked after a poor start and his replacement Ruben Amorim leading the club to their first bottom-half finish in the competition. This term has shown signs of recovery, with Amorim’s side in eighth place after 14 games, but there is still work to be done.

They next face undefeated Wolves on Monday, but Amorim is not underestimating their opponent. “Anything can happen and it will change,” he told reporters.

“There hasn’t been a team in the history of the Premier League that hasn’t won a game. So it can happen in any game. So we have to try to improve, rest the players, work really hard and prepare for a tough game, because for us it’s always a tough game.”
