Steven Gerrard has not held a managerial role since leaving Saudi Arabia’s Al Etifaq in January, but the Liverpool legend has no intention of jumping into a coaching job in England.

Steven Gerrard returned to Anfield on Wednesday night to see his former club Liverpool slide further into crisis. Gerrard has been forced to give his opinion on Arne Slott’s job security, but the former midfielder has no intention of jumping into a management role himself.

Liverpool lost 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, and after also easily winning against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City, it was their third straight defeat by three points. The defending Premier League champions are in turmoil, having lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions.

Mirror Football understands the slot job is safe for now, but there is no doubt the pressure is mounting on the Dutchman. Slott desperately needs a result next Sunday when they face West Ham in the Premier League.

The presence of club legend Gerrard at Anfield, who is a pundit for TNT Sports, will not be forgotten by some Reds fans. But even if he wanted to take over as Slott’s replacement, there is little chance of that happening in the near future, although the 45-year-old is available after leaving Saudi Arabian club Al Etifaq in January.

This is mainly for tax reasons, with a huge bill of £10m hanging over his head if he were to take up a management role in the UK. Mr Gerrard will have to wait until April to get a permanent job in the UK, as he must remain abroad for the entire tax year to ensure his income is tax-free.

Gerrard can spend 91 days in the UK this tax year, but taking up a full-time management role would clearly break that boundary. Speaking on Wednesday night, he sought to support Slott, who are struggling just months after winning the Premier League title in their debut season.

“Every time we lose, especially depending on how we lose, we get closer to a crisis,” Gerrard told TNT Sports. “I don’t like to use the word crisis, because for me a crisis is something that takes years for the club to get back to the top.

“I don’t think Liverpool are at that stage at all. They still have great players. Most of the team that won the league a few months ago is still this team. So I think ‘crisis’ is too strong a word. But there’s no denying that this team is struggling a lot.”

Asked about Liverpool’s performance after the game, Gerrard added: “No, that’s not (acceptable). They concede too many goals, they have gaps, they’re vulnerable and unstable.”

“Anfield is telling a story. The seats are empty, PSV are great, we felt comfortable here tonight and we deserved a win. Liverpool’s problems are deeper, the pressure is more intense and there is definitely some soul searching needed.”
