Arne Slott is under pressure after Liverpool suffered another humiliating defeat at home on Wednesday night, with former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso set to return to Anfield.

Kylian Mbappé has backed Xabi Alonso as the Real Madrid manager looks to become Liverpool’s next manager. Liverpool’s disastrous season took a turn for the worse on Wednesday night when they lost 4-1 at home to PSV Eindhoven.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal canceled out Ivan Perisic’s early penalty, but Guus Till’s strike and late Kuhaib Driwes double ended a disastrous night at Anfield. Despite it being Liverpool’s ninth defeat in 12 games, Mirror Football understands that parting ways with Slott are not an imminent decision. However, that did not prevent bookmakers from revealing their thoughts on who could replace the Dutchman on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp is the favorite to make a sensational return to Anfield, but BetVictor has cut Alonso’s odds to 5/2. He is 6/1 on both Paddy Power and Sky Bet.

Alonso has been under pressure at the Santiago Bernabéu in recent weeks after a mixed start to the season. However, Mbappe contributed to all four goals in Madrid’s 4-3 win over Olympiakos on Wednesday night, making him the second-fastest hat-trick in Champions League history.

Los Blancos were trailing behind Siquinho’s opening goal at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, but Siquinho stepped in with seven-minute triples in the 22nd, 24th and 29th minutes. The World Cup winners added a fourth between Mehdi Taremi and Ayoub El Kaabi’s superb headers, helping to secure all three points for his side.

And in his post-match speech, Mbappe called on Real players to “protect” Alonso, saying: “I know people talk a lot outside. When you play for Real Madrid, it’s normal for people to talk.”

“We have to protect our players, coaches and staff. At the end of the day, we’re all in this together.”

“I think we need to be honest. We are very united. Nothing is perfect in life.

“When you change projects and coaches, it’s normal for there to be changes, but I don’t think he deserves everything that’s going on.

“I understand that, because we are Real Madrid and people always have to talk about Real Madrid. It’s not a negative thing, it’s just life.”

“I think the goal now is to make the fans feel that we are united and rowing in the same direction.

“There may be moments on the boat when the wind picks up, but no one wants to jump off. This year we are all united and united to win the title.”
