Slott said after the game that he felt safe in his position, but acknowledged that conceding a goal would bring extra heat.

“There’s a lot of pressure when you work and play at a top club, but when you start losing more games than this club, the players and the manager are used to, there’s even more pressure. So there’s always pressure,” the Liverpool manager said.

“But last season there was also a lot of pressure to win the league, but now it’s a different kind of pressure because we lost so many games.”

Slott put in a near-perfect performance in his first season at Anfield, leading the club to a record-equalling 20th league title, 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal. Stepping into one of the toughest jobs in football, he was widely expected to downplay the successor to Liverpool great Jurgen Klopp and retain the title.

“We’re going to keep fighting and trying to get better. That’s what we’re all striving for,” Slott said. “In the end, it’s important to carry out what this club aspires to and keep fighting. No matter how difficult it is, we have to fight together.”

Goalkeeper Alisson missed the game against PSV due to illness but is back in Liverpool training, while Wirtz, who has had a muscular problem, could train ahead of the game against West Ham.

Slott said he doesn’t expect Hugo Ekitike’s back problem, which forced him off against PSV, to be a “big problem”.
