MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Everton midfielder Idrissa Gay was sent off on Monday for slapping teammate Michael Keane during the first half of a Premier League game against Manchester United.<\/p>\n
Gueye and Keane were involved in an altercation in the 13th minute, 0-0 at Old Trafford, after United’s Bruno Fernandes took a shot after a midfielder’s turnover.<\/p>\n
His teammates were in the face, but Keane shoved Guye and Gueye slapped the defender in the face with his left hand. Referee Tony Harrington then showed Gueye a red card.<\/p>\n
Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and winger Iliman Ndiaye intervened to pull Guye away.<\/p>\n
of Premier League match center posted<\/span> on X: “It was confirmed by VAR that the referee handed Gueye a red card for violent conduct, which was clearly deemed to be a blow to Keane’s face.”<\/p>\nIn this play, Gueye collected the ball inside Everton’s penalty area and played a pass into space, perhaps expecting Keane to move towards the ball. Keane did not do so, but the United captain intervened and fired the ball wide.<\/p>\n
Even though I lost the man, Everton won the match 1-0.<\/span>. Keenan Dewsbury-Hall scored in the 29th minute.<\/p>\nGueye apologized after the match.<\/p>\n
“First of all I would like to apologize to my teammate Michael Keane. I take full responsibility for my reaction,” the Senegalese player said on his Instagram account. \u201cI would like to apologize to my teammates, staff, fans and club.<\/p>\n
“What happened does not reflect who I am or the values \u200b\u200bI stand for,” Guye’s post continued. “Emotions may run high, but nothing justifies such behavior. We will ensure that this never happens again.”<\/p>\n
