I’ve never seen anything like this in Vancouver. A club MLS-era record 53,957 fans packed BC Place on Saturday night, waving towels and cheering every turn of an unforgettable Western Conference semifinal. <\/p>\n
And when the game finally ended with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over LAFC after 120 tense minutes, the Vancouver Whitecaps did just that. They are headed to the MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Finals for the first time in club history.<\/p>\n
And no player defined this breakthrough more than German legend Thomas Muller, who became Vancouver’s most influential player in history.<\/p>\n
Muller’s arrival changed everything<\/h2>\n
When Muller landed in Vancouver in August after a 17-year career with Bayern Munich, the Whitecaps were already in the midst of a successful season. But the moment he put on the blue and white shirt, the club leveled up. World Cup winner. Champions League winner. <\/p>\n
One of the most decorated players of his generation. And he quickly backed that up with a record of nine goals and four assists in 11 games across all competitions, making an even bigger impact in terms of mentality and leadership. Saturday night was a new chapter in that story. M\u00fcller almost scored in first-half stoppage time, rising to Berhalter’s corner kick and firing a powerful header that Hugo Lloris narrowly tipped over the line. <\/p>\n
His presence alone shifted LAFC’s attention on defense and created space for Matias Laborda’s rebound finish to put Vancouver up 2-0 before intermission. After the game, Muller summed up the night and the team’s spirit simply: “Everything makes our sport beautiful. We saw it all tonight. Thank you everyone for your support.”<\/p>\n
A historic night at BC Place<\/h2>\n
This was the kind of game that remains legendary for the club. LAFC gave it their all against Vancouver, especially superstar Son Heung-min, who scored two late goals to send the game into overtime. The Whitecaps played until the final minutes of regulation and were down one man after MLS Defender of the Year Tristan Blackmon was controversially sent off.<\/p>\n
Still, Vancouver held out. They survived a series of upsets in which LAFC hit the post, the crossbar, and then the post again in extra stoppage time. They absorbed wave after wave of pressure. He then handed the moment to 26-year-old Matias Laborda, who converted the crucial penalty kick and sent BC Place into raptures.<\/p>\n

The Whitecaps’ run under first-year head coach Jesper S\u00f8rensen has already been one of the most remarkable seasons in MLS this year, and Muller’s mid-season arrival has made this team football to watch. “This group, this city…I’m very proud to be a part of it,” Muller said after the win.
