Liverpool currently find themselves in the bottom half of the table for the first time in a decade, with pressure mounting on Slot to halt their slide into the table, with speculation in some circles about a managerial change.

Asked about the club’s dismal results at Anfield and his support for the head coach, Van Dijk was candid.

“We’re definitely letting him down, but we’re also letting ourselves down,” he said. “First we look at ourselves and then we help each other get out of this mess, because at the moment it’s a mess, it’s just a fact.

“As champions, we can’t be in the situation we’re in, but that’s a fact. What are we going to do about it? We’re going to try to turn things around. That’s the mentality everyone should have.”

Asked about the atmosphere in the dressing room after Forest’s defeat, Van Dijk admitted: “Yes, you should be angry. The most important thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.”

“Is everyone doing that? I don’t know. But it has to be done. That’s the number one thing I want the players to do. It’s not easy in difficult times, but it has to be done if you want to get out of this situation.”

“What I want is for everyone to take responsibility on the pitch. We have to do that to push each other and make each other better. When someone is pressing, we have to follow the press.

“It’s fundamental, but it’s not happening enough. We have to go back to that. When things aren’t going well, it can be easy to think only about your own situation and not the bigger picture.”

Looking back on last year, Van Dijk said: “When you think about last year, which you don’t want to do too much, we had a new manager and no one knew what was going to happen, but our consistency was unbelievable.

“This season we’ve been inconsistent, we’ve conceded too many goals, we’ve lost games and we’re all responsible for that and I hope everyone understands that. We have to take responsibility for turning this around and it’s easy to blame, but we all have to work together.”

“We went through it together and won the league and we were all part of it and we were all happy. When times are tough you have to stick together instead of pointing fingers. You have to face tough situations like a man and try again and again. If you want to give up then you are in the wrong place in my eyes because this club has gone through a lot of adversity over the years and we have always come back from it.”

“But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It’s tiring, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Wednesday (Champions League home game against PSV Eindhoven) is another game, so why not go home and cry? No, we’re going to go home and think about how we can turn things around. Hopefully, that’s what everyone is doing.”

Despite having 74 per cent possession against Forest, Liverpool only managed 4 of 21 shots on target, making it the first time since February 2023 that they have failed to score in consecutive league games.

The Reds have kept just three clean sheets in the Premier League this season and have conceded 20 goals in 12 top-flight games, their worst defensive start to the season since 1992.

It was Van Dijk’s fifth defeat in a home league game since arriving at Anfield nearly eight years ago. “Was it as bad as this season? Yes, we can’t lose 3-0 at home. If you look at the 30 minutes we played, you could say we still performed very well, but it showed that we didn’t play more than 30 minutes of football.”

“We conceded a goal and the panic started. As a team, we have to stay calm and try to do the right thing. But we didn’t do that and it’s hard to accept that. We were nervous with the way we played. We were trying to force things.”

“And the way we started the second half was completely unacceptable. When we go into half-time, we talk about what we want to do in the second half. Then when you concede such an easy goal and you’re 2-0 down, it’s a completely different story. It’s difficult.”

“We have to be mentally strong and keep pushing forward. We have to find the composure to create chances and stay calm in front of goal. But we didn’t do that and Forest won a lot of battles against us physically as well.

“Overall a very disappointing afternoon and hard to accept. That’s the reality. I’m not a quitter. I’ll never quit. I’ll keep going, but that doesn’t mean it’s not hard to accept. I recognize that we are in a very difficult moment.”
