The Scottish Championship game between Queen’s Park and Ross County was postponed just 15 minutes before kick-off, leaving traveling fans forced to return 280 miles home.

The match was due to be played at Lesser Hampden on Friday night, but at around 7.30pm referee Lloyd Wilson and the team decided the pitch was not up to standard. The combination of the previous night’s frost and the rain during the day made the roads slippery and dangerous.

Both teams were reportedly dissatisfied with the condition of the stadium, which meant around 200 away fans were unable to watch the football and had to make the arduous journey home.

The county of Ross is based in Dingwall in the north of Scotland. It’s 290 miles to Glasgow, and some people have logged 360 miles round trip.

A statement from organizers said: “Tonight’s match officials have postponed tonight’s William Hill Championship match against Ross County. This decision was taken in consultation with both the Queen’s Park head coach and the Ross County manager, with player safety in mind. Tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled match, but refunds are available. Supporters are asked to contact Queen’s Park FC on Monday to arrange this.”

There was little indication that the game would be cancelled. Less than an hour before kick-off, Queen’s Park posted a photo of their players warming up with the caption: “Let’s keep warm on a cold night.”

Ross County had posted similar content on their social media pages, but after the match was postponed they issued a new communication saying they would “apologize to all our traveling supporters”. Following the decision, visiting manager John Robertson was seen speaking to fans in the stands.

This was a further blow for Queen’s Park, which welcomed BBC Scotland to its stadium for the first time, but the match was not broadcast.

Queen’s Park and Ross County are eighth and ninth in the Scottish Premiership standings. Both teams have won just two of their 15 games, only narrowly ahead of Airdrionians who sit at the bottom of Scotland’s second tier. Ross County only played in the top flight last year.
