On Thursday, Nov. 13, MLS announced it would align its calendar with world-famous tournaments as the next step toward global integration. This new annual structure will come into effect from 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Migration is not limited to schedules. The league also plans to change the format and adjust the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. That&#8217;s why the league&#8217;s Board of Directors, meeting today in Palm Beach, Florida, approved both a new calendar and an updated competition format.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"ue-c-article__blockquote\">\n<p>This change to our calendar is a transformative moment for Major League Soccer. \u201d&#8230; \u201cAligning our calendar with major leagues around the world strengthens our clubs&#8217; global competitiveness, creates better opportunities in the transfer market and ensures that the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs take center stage without interruption. This marks the beginning of a new era for our league and for North American soccer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ue-c-article__blockquote-author\">don garber<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MLS Commissioner Don Garber said:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ue-c-article__subheadline\">New structure for MLS season<\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned above, the changes will take effect from the 2027-28 season. The season begins in mid-July and concludes with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup in May. The league will go on hiatus in mid-December and resume operations in February, meaning no games will be played completely in January.<\/p>\n<p>To arrive at the new format, MLS will enter a transition period from February to May 2027, during which 14 games, the postseason, and MLS Cup will be held. The results of this transition competition will determine which clubs qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ue-c-article__subheadline\">Benefits of the new MLS calendar<\/h2>\n<p>By collaborating with the world&#8217;s top leagues, MLS enjoys significant benefits, including:<\/p>\n<p> Player transfers follow the customs of major clubs. Ability to operate within the same market as other players and bring in and send out players during the summer period. Ensure calendar alignment with FIFA to avoid confusion and pressure on players. The quality of the postseason has improved thanks to more favorable weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>This process began in 2023 when the league first evaluated the possibility of implementing these changes. The opinions of fans and sports experts played a key role in shaping the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Another big factor was the climate.
