Sven-Goran Eriksson’s family have had to sell their six-bedroom mansion in Sweden after the former England manager left £7m worth of debts on his death.

Sven-Göran Eriksson’s luxurious mansion has been sold in a cut-price deal as his family unloads his assets to pay off debts totaling more than £7 million left behind when he died.

The former England manager passed away from pancreatic cancer in August last year. He owed the British taxman £7.4 million at the time of his death, as well as at least £1 million in other debts, and it has now emerged that his family has sold their seven-bed home in Torsby, Värmland.

The luxury property in Sweden is now officially on sale, but for more than 25 percent less than originally planned. It was on the market for £2m, but the Sun claimed it had to reduce its price by £400,000 to attract offers.

The report adds that the property was eventually sold for at least £1.3 million (undisclosed) after an unnamed e-commerce businessman bought it after renovations to the house were carried out by his father for Ericsson.

“Of course, I thought it was great, but it wasn’t yet obvious to me to buy it when it came up for sale. It was a big project and I felt a big responsibility. But the opportunity to manage a small part of Värmland’s cultural heritage and at the same time enjoy a wonderful environment was what appealed to me in the end.”

“We live and work in Stockholm, but my soul is always somewhere north of Värmland. I plan to spend as much time there as possible. I’m originally from Torsby myself and my whole family is in Värmland. We’re always in Torsby on holidays. Our dream with Bjorkefors is to make this the obvious place for families to gather for generations.”

Sven bought the house for £4.5 million in 2002, when he was England manager, but later sold the property, leaving him with a loss of around £3 million. The family not only had to sell their property, but also their collection of memorabilia to raise the necessary funds.

Among the items they cashed in was the Armani suit he wore during the 2006 World Cup match between England and Portugal (his last game), with a handwritten team note still in his pocket. It was £140,000.

Despite managing 12 clubs and four national teams during his 42-year managerial career and earning millions of dollars, Eriksson remains heavily in debt. His highest earning came from his time with the Three Lions, where he earned £22.5m over his five-year spell.

But after investing in a failed film scheme aimed at deferring tax payments, which was ruled illegal, he owed HMRC millions of dollars.
