Former England manager Gareth Southgate has insisted he is in no rush to return to management despite his links with Manchester United. The 55-year-old has been out of work since leaving the Three Lions last summer.<\/p>\n
During his time with England, Southgate led the team to two European Championship finals and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. His last game as a manager was in the Euro 2024 final, a 2-1 defeat against Spain.<\/p>\n
He has since been linked with a return to Man United manager following Ruben Amorim’s early struggles at the club. Just last month, it was claimed that Southgate would make demands on United if he were to take the Old Trafford job.<\/p>\n

Since then, the club has improved under Amorim. His side had won their last three Premier League games before a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the weekend.<\/p>\n
Mr Southgate has now outlined his stance on his new management role. The former England manager suggested that is not in his current plans.<\/p>\n
Speaking on BBC Breakfast, he said: “I’ve had a great time. Obviously the great thing about England is that there’s a higher purpose. I joined the FA to help improve English football, and in particular to help develop the youth. I somehow stumbled into a first-team manager’s job, but I’ve had a really good time.”<\/p>\n
“It’s not that I want to stay in football. It’s amazing that I’ve been playing football for 37 years.”<\/p>\n
When asked if he had any major work to do, he replied: “Well, I can’t say never because I’ve just seen Martin O’Neill go to Celtic at that age, but that’s not my priority at the moment. I enjoy the leadership work, I enjoy working with young people and I’m very determined to make a difference at Celtic.”<\/p>\n
“So, no, I’m very relaxed about not being involved in football at the moment.”<\/p>\n

Just a few weeks ago, Southgate also spoke at the Aspire Academy Global Summit, where people from all areas of professional football share knowledge. He joins the likes of Rafael Benitez, Carli Lloyd, Wilfried Nancy and Alessandro Nesta.<\/p>\n
Southgate said at the summit: “The most important thing for the development of football is the development of coaches.”<\/p>\n
“We’re all learning all the time, and having people come together to share experiences and ideas helps us grow, especially as the game continues to evolve.”<\/p>\n
Despite his success in England, Southgate has limited experience in club management. His only on-field job was as manager of Middlesbrough from mid-2006 to October 2009, but the team were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2008\/09 season.<\/p>\n
