Liverpool fielded a weakened side and were duly punished with a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the League Cup on Wednesday, the latest setback to befall the beleaguered English champions.

Ismaila Sarr scored twice in the first half at Anfield, and Yeremy Pino added a third at Palace as Liverpool suffered their sixth defeat in their last seven matches.

Premier League leaders Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea also advanced to the quarter-finals, with defending champions Newcastle defeating Tottenham 2-0.

rear 4 consecutive losses It has turned out to be an unexpectedly poor start to the season for the club, with Liverpool now losing one of their two domestic cup competitions as their Premier League title defense teeters. spent $570 million in the summer transfer market.

This defeat can at least be explained by the fact that manager Arne Slott rested most of his top players, including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Codi Gakpo and Alexander Isak, and did not include them on the bench.

A team filled mostly with young players was destroyed by Sarr. Sarr added to his tally with goals in the 41st and 45th minutes as Palace beat Liverpool in the Community Shield (penalty shootout) and also won the Premier League this season.

18-year-old defender Amara Naro came on as a substitute in the 67th minute for Liverpool, but was sent off 12 minutes later for a foul as the last defender on the pitch. In his only appearance for the Reds, the Champions League in January, Naro received a red card four minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Pino scored Palace’s third goal in the 88th minute.

“It might go up a little bit, but not by much because the pressure was already so high,” Slott said. The team’s next three matches start on Saturday against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Man City.

“Everyone can have an opinion on that,” he added. “But given our squad, probably 15 or six first-team players available, this is the choice I made.”

In the team’s 2-0 win over Brighton, Max Dauman became Arsenal’s youngest ever player to start at the age of 15 years and 302 days.

The league leaders also faced a weakened side, but that didn’t affect them, with goals scored by Ethan Nwaneri, who replaced Dauman, and Bukayo Saka.

Man City came from behind to beat second-tier Swansea 3-1 with goals from Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmouche and the impressive Rayan Cherki.

Prolific City striker Erling Haaland was fully rested and unable to make the bench.

Chelsea beat Wolverhampton 4-3 in a hard-fought game at Molineux that saw Enzo Maresca’s undisciplined side receive their fifth red card of the season.

Chelsea led 3-0 by half-time with goals from Andrei Santos, Tyrik George and Estevao, but Wolves hit back with goals from Tolu Arokodea and David Moller-Wolf.

Liam Delap, returning from injury, collected two yellow cards and was sent off in the 86th, before Jamie Gittens made it 4-2. Wolff scored again in stoppage time for Wolves, who are bottom of the Premier League.

Newcastle’s first goal against Tottenham was a controversial header from Fabian Schaal from a corner. The set-piece was slotted in as soon as Spurs defender Jed Spence put on his boots and stood up.

Tottenham’s protests to the referee were ignored and Nick Waltemade added a second goal by heading a cross past goalkeeper Antonin Kinski, but the goalkeeper missed the punch clear.

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace

cardiff vs chelsea

Manchester City vs. Brentford

Newcastle vs Fulham

___

Steve Douglas is https://twitter.com/sdouglas80

___

AP Soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer

Arsenal record breaking
