Michael Owen believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe has achieved the perfect result by publicly backing Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim, despite growing calls for the embattled manager’s firing. Amorim faced a tough opening day at Old Trafford and twice offered to resign if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s powers believed it would benefit United’s cause.<\/p>\n

Rumors have been circulating about Ratcliffe’s true attitude towards the Portuguese manager. Ratcliffe, who oversees the club’s football operations, described the 40-year-old manager as a “good guy” who deserved recognition throughout his three-year contract.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“He hasn’t had the best season,” Ratcliffe admitted. “Amorim is a good guy. I think Ruben needs three years to prove he is a great manager. Football doesn’t happen overnight, so I’ll be there – three years. Look at Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, he had a miserable first few years.”<\/p>\n

The English businessman was also asked about the possibility of him intervening if United’s controlling owners, the Glazer family, demanded Amorim’s sacking, but Ratcliffe denied such a possibility, saying: “That’s not going to happen.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking to Sky Bet about the matter, Owen declared that he believed Ratcliffe’s public support of Amorim was the right strategy. “I don’t know what Sir Jim Ratcliffe expects to say about Ruben Amorim,” said the former United, Liverpool and England striker.<\/p>\n

“Of course he will support the manager in public. That’s what you do. He can’t exactly say, ‘I have three more games to save my job.'” What else can he say? It’s one of those questions where there’s no right answer.<\/p>\n

“Behind closed doors he may have more pragmatic views, but in public he has to support the manager. That’s how the world of football works. If Manchester United lose the next five games the atmosphere will change, but for now he is doing the right thing by supporting the manager.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Owen also backed Amorim to remain in charge of his former club for the foreseeable future. He added: “Rouven Amorim will be the man to lead Manchester United for many years to come.” “When Erik ten Hag was the manager, I said from the beginning that I couldn’t see it, I didn’t agree with his words or his style of football.<\/p>\n

“But as for Amorim, I like what he says and his principles. With time, investment and stability, he can succeed. Some huge managers have failed at that club in the last 10 years, so at some point you have to stop cutting and changing and stick with someone.”<\/p>\n

“The club has changed everything: the manager, the facilities, the staff, the boardroom. Now the club needs stability and time to get back on track. That’s what Amorim can bring if given the chance.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
