McNeil, 85, was playing in the old second division when he first received an international call-up. And even though he never won a top league spot, he continued to make brilliant achievements as a representative of his home country.

He tragically passed away earlier this week and Middlesbrough announced the sad news through a statement on social media. A statement from Boro said: “The club was saddened to learn of the death of former player Michael McNeil. Mick was born in Middlesbrough on 7 February 1940. A high-flying full-back, he started his Boro career aged just 18 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s highlights.”

“Quick into the tackle and keen to move the ball forward, Mick was full of energy and versatile. He played at left-back until the arrival of club record appearance holder Gordon Jones, who moved him to right-back, before moving into the center of defense with the arrival of Cyril Knowles.”

“Mick won nine caps in 1960-1961 despite playing in England’s second division.

“He then went on to make over 150 appearances for Ipswich Town, helping them win promotion in 1967/68, before finishing his career at Cambridge. After retiring from playing, he opened a successful sports shop chain.

“Mick passed away earlier this week at the age of 85. Our condolences go out to Mick’s family and friends.”

McNeil made his debut for England in a 5-2 win over Northern Ireland in October 1960, playing alongside future England manager Sir Bobby Robson. He went on to win nine caps for the Three Lions.

Ipswich Town, where McNeil also displayed talent, said: “The club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former captain Mick McNeil.

“Mick represented the Blues 173 times between 1964 and 1972 and was part of the side that won the Second Division title in 1967/68. Once a Blues, always a Blues.”

In 1964 he moved to Ipswich Town for a fee of £17,000, taking on the role of club captain and playing a key role in Bill McGarry’s side winning promotion to the top flight in 1968. He made a total of 173 appearances for the club during his eight-year spell at Portman Road, scoring five goals.

Supporters also took the opportunity to pay tribute to one of the club’s legends. One fan commented: “Awful, he was a great player and will be fondly remembered.”

Source link

Former England star Mick McNeil, who played for the Three Lions while playing in the second tier of club football, has tragically passed away.
