There are a whopping 6,000 miles between Shanghai and Glasgow. If Kevin Muscat had stayed up late in his Chinese mansion watching the team he was about to take over at Ibrox, he would have seen first-hand how far this Rangers team is from the position they want.<\/p>\n

Under-19s manager Stephen Smith stepped in as caretaker manager in the 2-2 draw with Dundee United, but it cost Rangers dearly as once again their amateur defense crumbled under pressure. Thero Asg\u00e5rd’s first goal for the club was overshadowed by two fine strikes from Dundee United’s Christian Trapanovski and Craig Sibbald, but James Tavernier added in the last minute.<\/p>\n

Rangers are currently far behind in the Premiership, with just one win in eight league games and none at Ibrox.<\/p>\n

If Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell believed that sacking Russell Martin would relieve pressure, they were quickly proven wrong by fans who booed at the full-time whistle.<\/p>\n

The match got off to a good start and they took the lead in the 25th minute.<\/p>\n

A brilliant flick from Jaydee Gassama inside his own half saw the tall Norwegian dart past Luka Stevenson into United’s box, before cutting back with his right foot to outshoot Bart Esselink and curl a superb shot past Evgeny Kucherenko.<\/p>\n

Rangers were dominant in the first half. However, with the lead so slim, anxiety crept in as the second half wore on and control of the game began to wane.<\/p>\n

United seized their chance. Remarkably, Trapanovski, fresh off the bench, equalized with a powerful 20-yard shot into the bottom corner of Jack Butland’s goal after receiving a pass from Zach Sapsford.<\/p>\n

Things got even better when United took the lead in the 75th minute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jack Butland appeared to avert danger with an important one-on-one save against Sapsford, but Rangers were unable to clear the ball and Sibbald fired an impressive 25-yard shot into the top corner.<\/p>\n

Ibrox was shocked. It looked like we were going to lose another three points.<\/p>\n

However, Tavernier scored the equalizer in the 87th minute after being laid off by substitute Mikey Moore with 14 yards remaining.<\/p>\n

Still, it took another stunning save from Butland to deny Trapanovski and secure a draw.<\/p>\n

Here are five key points.<\/p>\n

It was a game of two halves. Rangers had 24 shots on United’s goal in the first half, but nothing could be more symbolic of the team’s renewed attacking appetite.<\/p>\n

What happened next remains a complete mystery.<\/p>\n

The first half went exactly as the Ibrox faithful expected their side to do, chasing United and attacking. The Rangers were moving the ball faster and with more purpose.<\/p>\n

The aim was to forget about the boring passing in their own half and get into United’s third half and play there. It took United four minutes to get a touch inside Rangers’ half.<\/p>\n

There was a light blue sense of urgency from the beginning that wasn’t there the previous week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, the Ibrox side fell into old habits and completely lost control of the second half. My passing became sluggish and I became anxious.<\/p>\n

United sensed an opportunity. And they caught both.<\/p>\n

Majestically.<\/p>\n

As always, it was captain Tavernier who stepped up to take the points back. His goals have contributed to five of Gers’ nine goals so far.<\/p>\n

The Rangers’ soft center has been exposed many times this season. And again, when players needed to stand up and be counted, they were nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n

Indeed, by half-time they should have been even further ahead. But the courage on the ball disappeared, their defensive form evaporated and, eventually, the points disappeared too.<\/p>\n

Both of United’s goals were well hit from distance, but the build-up easily penetrated the Light Blues’ backline.<\/p>\n

If Kevin Muscat is approved, he will face a huge task of adding steel to the Rangers’ soft center.<\/p>\n

Dundee United had not celebrated a victory at Ibrox since 2014, when the Tangerines won 3-1 in the Scottish Cup. But with a courageous and determined second-half performance, they came close to breaking that streak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jim Goodwin strategically packed his midfield into a 4-5-1 formation, aiming for a counterattack in the first half. This tactic initially seemed ineffective, but the introduction of Trapanovski and Canara in the 66th minute turned the game around.<\/p>\n

Sensing Gers’ anxiety, United seized the opportunity and attacked relentlessly. Goodwin’s team showed no weaknesses, with outstanding performances from Craig Sibbald, Vicky Severi and Zach Sapsford.<\/p>\n

Asgard gets the highest score<\/p>\n

Despite Asgord’s high-profile summer signings, they have been a huge disappointment so far.<\/p>\n

But there was a glimmer of hope for the Rangers. The \u00a33.5m midfielder ultimately lived up to his price tag, leading the middle three. He epitomized Rangers’ first-half display and suggested they were untethered.<\/p>\n

Asgord consistently found openings near United’s box and had five shots on goal in the first half alone, including a stunning opener. The player scored 15 goals for Wigan and Luton last season, but has barely managed a goal or even a shot for Rangers.<\/p>\n

He certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.<\/p>\n

The Ibrox faithful saw their wishes come true with Martin’s sacking, and in the opening 10 minutes they held up a banner reading “No more buses to hide behind” at the players. No more managers hiding behind your back \u2013 face failure like a man.<\/p>\n

If the club’s top brass believed that sacking the embattled manager would restore their reputation, they were wrong. A half-time banner was unveiled in the Sandy Jardine Stand reading: “Stewart and Thelwell pack their bags and leave before we do.” for you’.<\/p>\n

As the search for Martin’s replacement drags on and the Rangers continue to fall behind, their own position is increasingly in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
