Premier League giants Manchester United are expected to oppose new financial “anchor” rules scheduled for a vote between the Red Devils and rival top clubs next month. This comes as the Premier League seeks to revamp its existing financial regulations.<\/p>\n

Under the current Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), clubs are allowed to make losses of \u00a3105m over three years, after deducting costs such as the women’s team and infrastructure. However, there are many question marks over the “fairness” of those rules.<\/p>\n

Over the past three seasons, three clubs have been accused of violating the PSR. Everton (twice) and Nottingham Forest both received point deductions from the Premier League.<\/p>\n

Leicester City were also charged but were acquitted due to jurisdictional reasons following their relegation to the Championship in 2023. However, the Foxes now face new charges following the revised rules, and it remains to be seen whether any violations will be discovered and potentially punished.<\/p>\n

A key aspect of the proposed new rules is anchoring, which would limit clubs to five times the amount earned by the bottom club in the league from both prize money and broadcast revenue. The Times said the original plans were considered in March, when the club first voted on the issue. Sixteen clubs are reported to have backed the idea.<\/p>\n

However, United, neighbors Manchester City and Aston Villa voted against the proposal, and Chelsea abstained. Critics argue that the scheme effectively acts as a salary cap and could have a negative impact on clubs’ ability to remain competitive in Europe, and could in turn damage the Premier League’s reputation as one of the world’s strongest domestic competitions.<\/p>\n

A second vote on the anchoring rules is expected to be held at the Premier League’s general meeting next month. The vote will be split into three sections: team proportion rules fixed at 85 per cent, anchoring and sustainability rules relating to a new independent regulator.<\/p>\n

As part of its proposals, the Premier League has also included potential penalties for breaches. One such penalty is a minimum deduction of six points and an additional point for every \u00a36.5 million over the limit.<\/p>\n

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already expressed his views on the proposed changes.<\/p>\n

“The last thing we want is for the top clubs in the Premier League to be unable to compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, \u200b\u200bBayern Munich and PSG, but that would be unreasonable,” he said. “If that happens, it won’t be the best league in the world.”<\/p>\n
