Chelsea are having a rocky season, and those of us who follow every game really get the sense that the Blues neither convince in attack nor defence.
At least they have their moments at the back – up top, things are historically bad. Duncan Alexander of Opta today pointed out that the Blues’ record after 21 games was 22 goals scored, the worst tally they’ve had since 1996 – an insane stat if you think about it.
The amount of money spent on players and coaches since then should have meant we’re far clear of those old averages.
22 goals is Chelsea’s lowest total after 21 PL games since 1995-96

You can spin it whatever way you want: you can blame Graham Potter or Thomas Tuchel, the new owners or the old owner, the old recruitment setup or the new recruitment setup, the players who were here before January or those who have arrived since.
Wherever you cast the blame, the stats are stark. Defending well is useful, but unless you’re scoring, it’s a wasted feat.
