Chelsea are “grooming” Reece James for a future captaincy role, according to Matt Law from The Telegraph.
Perhaps a poor choice of words, Matt Law means that Chelsea are giving him extra responsibilities off the pitch like more media work, to see if Reece is the ideal candidate for the armband.
Chelsea already view Reece as a player that leads by example on the pitch but the club are looking into him as a future captain. N’Golo Kante would also be considered should be sign a new deal however there must be questions around how many games he would start and feature as the captain.
Mason Mount’s future is in some doubt as he continues not to sign a new deal, he has also been viewed as a potential future captain.
In any case, it looks like Reece James is the leading contender to become the new captain as Cesar Azpilicueta is set to leave in the summer.
