Pundit Noel Whelan says he is “surprised” that Leeds United have not considered a move for Liverpool forward Divock Origi, who he believes could fit in well at Elland Road.

Origi has become a cult hero in his time at Liverpool, known best for his vital contributions off the bench.

Last season, he scored three goals from as many shots on target to fire Jurgen Klopp‘s side to Champions League glory.

Overall, however, he has struggled for game time due to the unmissable threat of Liverpool’s famed front three. As such, reports claim the Reds could sell him this summer with Aston Villa keen.

Speaking to Football Insider, though, Whelan urged Leeds to join the race for the Belgian, highlighting his attacking qualities.

“I do like Origi,” Whelan said. “He has pace, power, can hold the ball up and can play out wide. He ticks a lot of boxes.

“I am surprised that Leeds have not questioned him but maybe his wages would be a stumbling block.

“When a player is at a big club like Liverpool, wages can be a problem especially when you only have a certain budget. Sometimes you need to shop carefully.”

Leeds could be in the market for a new centre-forward ahead of their return to the Premier League. Patrick Bamford scored 16 Championship goals this season but the Whites could look for support.

Indeed, the Whites did bring Jean-Kevin Augustin in from RB Leipzig in January but he suffered from continued fitness concerns.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has promised to invest in a bid to help his side impress next season. The Whites are back in the top flight for the first time in 16 years.

Meanwhile, Norwich are reportedly willing to sell Leeds target Emiliano Buendia for around £20million.

The 23-year-old was a shining light for the Canaries in an otherwise disappointing Premier League return.

Now, Norwich have reportedly outlined their plans to let him go and will listen to sensible offers.
