Pete O’Rourke reports for Football Insider that League One sides Portsmouth and Cambridge United are racing to sign Arsenal youth forward Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, with the Gunners looking to loan the 20-year-old this summer.
Both clubs are in talks with the player’s camp, looking to convince him to choose them.
Butler-Oyedeji has been playing for the Arsenal u21s in recent weeks, after spending last season out on loan with Accrington Stanley.
But in a recent interview with The Beautiful Game Podcast, Butler-Oyedeji suggested another loan could be on the cards this season.
“Possibly another loan, a season-long loan,” Butler-Oyedeji said of his plan for the 2023/24 campaign. “To really establish [myself], getting first-team football, prove myself and go from there, really.
“I don’t really mind [where], League One, League Two, I’m open to abroad as well.
“We’ve spoken to the club (Arsenal), but I still need to speak to them to iron another few things out.”
Butler-Oyedeji went out on a short-term loan to Accrington Stanley last season, so this would be his first full-season switch.
Though he’d largely played at centre-forward for Arsenal in the first half of the season, Butler-Oyedeji played more of an attacking midfield role for Accrington, and he was in and out of the side over his three months with them.
Overall, the Arsenal academy youngster made five starts and six substitute appearances in League One. A decent start, but something he’ll be looking to build on now.
